The Art of Recording

Whether you are spending the big bucks on a state of the art professional studio or you are looking to build your own recording studio, the basics of recording is something you as a musician should be familiar with. The more you know about this very important aspect of your product, the more control you can have over how it is presented.

Very often musicians are scared of the technical aspects of the recording studio. Well don't be, this is not brain science. With a little bit of research and some experimentation you will quickly grasped enough of this information to be able to stand on firm ground with any recording engineer and well prepared to produce your music.

If you are looking to start a home studio or you have one and you want to get better recordings then this will be an invaluable resource. I have been recording for almost 30 years now. I am going to make sure the information that you will get here will be timely, relavant and will help you make better recordings.

Home Studio Links

The Blogs

Home Recording Blog - This has some real world information. You can get an RSS link so new articles will be emailed to you when they come out. A worthy Site.

Gear Slutz - Here is another great blog if you want to learn about different studio gear, microphones, pre amps and techniques. Many of the users post reviews of their gear so you can make more informed decisions of what you need to buy. BE WARNED! Buying Studio gear is VERY ADDICTIVE!

Recording.org - another site with studio owners, project Studio owners get together to discuss techniques and gear. Lots of great information can be gleaned from these blogs.

Home Recording - And the blogs keep coming! Yes they all have something to offer .. and you need to check them out find out which one works for you (or all of them.. which is what I do) and check them often .. or search for information you are looking for.

Of course for gear reviews I always hit
Harmony Central first. They have the largest collection of user reviews on music gear. Guitars, amps, mics you name it .. it is reviewed here .. Not to mention the forums and other information for the musician

The Microphone Shootouts!!

As gear gets cheaper and easier to obtain, sometimes you want to see how it stacks up with the real expensive stuff, or even how it stacks up to the other inexpensive gear. If you plan on stocking your home studio the Microphone is the one critical component you can't have enough of. Here are some great resources to help you making those buying decisions.

The listening Room is a great ongoing project that allows you to hear and compare a wide variety of Mics, Mic pre's and other critical recording gear.

The Transom Blind Mic Shootout - Test your ears and see if you can hear the difference between the real expensive mics and the inexpensive ones. And if you can't do you really need to spend all that money? You tell for yourself!

The U47 Shootout - Ok so you have some real bucks to spend, but just not enough for that Neumann U47. Well here are a collection of U47 clones that you can get for a little less, you listen for yourself if they really stack up to the legend of mics!

AudioMidi.com has another 8 mics that it tests side by side, the is really the only way to choose what mic is right for you! Why read reviews when you can hear it for yourself.

Recording Magazines

Sound on Sound - Great UK recording Magazine with informative articles and intensive reviews of gear. Well worth check out and reading. They also recently started podcasting so pop over and subscribe ..

Mix Magazine - the grandaddy of recording magazines. If you own a studio in the US .. I think it's a law you have to read this one .. stop by and see why for yourself.

EQ Magazine - Another great resource, well worth checking out on a continual basis.

Electronic Musician - This is another granddaddy that has been around forever. I have always enjoyed reading this magazine .. and at one time I use to write for them as well as some other now defunct magazines .. AmigoTimes, MCS (music computers and software) .. etc

NEWSGROUPS

I'm not going to comment on each of these .. sometimes they are great sometimes they are crap, but there are times you can ask a question and actually get a good answer.
