The Music "BUSINESS"
You need to realize one real simple fact. This is the music "BUSINESS"! Sure music is an art, but when you walk off that stage and back into the real world the fact remains if you want to continue getting back up on that stage you are going to have to face the fact that this is a BUSINESS.
You need to look at your band or your musical product as a Small Business. There is a wide variety of resources available for small businesses, and they very much apply to the music business. Business is business and the more you realize and embrace this the more successful you will be in your career. What I am going to do with this section is give you some specific resources that you can use to start you on your way to learning and understanding this very important fact.
You spend years perfecting your craft, it only stands to reason that you invest some time in to learning about the business you want to be in. It is to YOUR advantage!
VIDEOS.
All throughout the internet there are resources scattered around. I am going to attempt to bring them together in a more concise manner so you can best use them. This section is going to be for video either from YouTube or other video podcast resources, what will be different is you will be able to access them in a much more logical manner .. I will be doing all the research and weeding out of the crap. So check out the videos .. watch them one at a time .. or play them all at the same time .. it's really freaky when you do that .. either way ENJOY

Music and Film/TV
Ok, you want to make it in the music business, well why not try and get your music placed in some independent films. We have a strong and vibrant independent film industry right here on Long Island. Each time an independent film is made the film makers take it and enter it into film festivals around the world .. talk about distribution!
Long Island Film Festival - They are in the 25th year and have expanded to include LA/Hollywood Showings of Long Island filmmakers!
Long Island Film/TV Foundation is home to the International Long Island Film Festival. This is a great place to start researching how to get your music placed into independent films!
Stony Brook Film Festival - This one is in Suffolk. You should make it a point to go to these film festivals and network with filmmakers, directors, producers and actors. You never know who or when your break will appear!
NY Film/Video Festival - It may not be on Long Island, but hey expand yourself!

Hamptons Film Festival - How can we not list this one! 14 Years and counting and lots of money, glitz and glamour!
The Independent - Stay up with what is happening in the independent film industry .. the site has some really cool features!
Music Licensing For Film and TV
PUMP AUDIO - Yea this is the one that was highly recommended to me by some independent film makers. From what I have been able to gather this is a really cool resource!
Norma Music - is recommended by the Music Business Academy and according to their website they require no upfront fee, they work off commission.
You License - this is a resource where people look for music to license and you can add your music to be considered for Film and TV! Put this on your list of must be on sites!
Film Music Network - This is a real good resource with listings of music needed by specific film and TV projects.
Rumblefish - This is a real musician friendly music licensing company. Definitely worth checking out!
How to find those tricky little film makers that need music!
Network, Network Network!! that is the name of the game .. start looking for where Filmmakers hang out .. go to some film festivals .. look for film events .. the best way to find them is to get yourself into the loop ..
LIFILM Yahoo Group - This is a very active group of Long Island Film Makers! I have been a member of this group for some time .. and they are really great! .. Sign up and listen and contribute!
FILMNYC website - add yourself to the director of services .. check out the announcements and so much more!
SAGINDIE - Screen Actors Guild with lots of resources!
Mandy - This is a real interesting site .. I guess this is where all the filmy's hang out .. they often put up requests for music .. why not put up a ad for music to be used .. Hmmm
Craigslist - Yea go figure .. apparently it's good for more than hot fun on lonely nights .. lots of independent filmmakers advertise for music or other services they need ..
JHD Productions - This is my buddy Hughie .. great guy .. excellent video production facility .. Huge amount of knowledge and experiance!
Film and Stage Showbiz Expo - Yea a New York city expo of film makers and show biz types .. if nothing else .. what a great excuse to hang out in the city for the day ..
Radio Promotion
These are companies do radio promotions .. basically get you radio airplay and coordinate you radio campaigns. I can't comment on who is good and who is not .. because I have no experience with any of these companies .. if you have a great resource let me know and I will add them with the appropriate comments!
